Responsible for providing the strategic vision and leadership for Breakthrough T1D’s Planned Giving program. The Associate Vice President is responsible for leading the effort to build the necessary infrastructure and develop the integrated plans, strategies, and processes for these initiatives. Through consultation and collaboration with staff leadership, volunteer partners and selected vendors, this position provides direction for the successful implementation and execution of initiatives to drive revenue from this critical channel.
Working closely with the SVP, Philanthropic Engagement this position will plan as well as evaluate foundational infrastructure for success to ensure that all program areas achieve organizational goals and objectives.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Program Strategy and Design:
- Design, implement and manage a robust nationwide planned giving program.
- Set annual strategies to meet nationwide planned giving activity metrics.
- Direct and implement multi-channel planned giving marketing strategies to generate new planned giving leads through direct mail, digital communications, leveraging organizational website, and marketing collateral in collaboration with Breakthrough T1D’s direct response, marketing and communications team and selected vendors.
- Develops and implement strategies to enhance the recruitment, recognition and stewardship of Beta Society members.
- Lead efforts for the organization to embrace planned giving as a critical aspect of our organization’s culture of philanthropy.
- In partnership with the SVP, Philanthropic Engagement and the VP, Leadership Giving design and implement a robust blended gifts strategy.
Program Leadership and Implementation:
- Hire, train, lead and inspire a strong planned giving team by providing appropriate levels of training, mentoring and professional development to team members.
- Provide expert counsel in planned giving strategies to colleagues across the country.
- Lead planned giving program strategy implementation across fundraising teams and in collaboration with chapter staff and volunteer partners.
- Provide technical and legal expertise in estate planning to prospective and current donors and to their advisors regarding the tax and charitable aspects of planned giving.
- Provide expertise in the construction and evaluation of complex planned giving agreements.
- Provide leadership and strategic guidance for the volunteer legacy leaders program.
- Develop and maintain strong collaborative working relationships with other members of the Development team and develop strategies to integrate planned giving into the cultivation of principal, major and intermediate gift donors
- Provide leadership and guidance to planned giving team to ensure effective and efficient gift administration, regular management reports, and database maintenance.
- Maintain expertise in legislation and regulations affecting charitable giving.
- Support the SVP, Philanthropic Engagement and the VP, Strategic Philanthropic Initiatives in the process by which Breakthrough T1D reviews and accepts complex deferred gifts as needed.
Management and Analysis:
- Oversee Breakthrough T1D’s estates administration program in collaboration with staff partners, selected vendors and legal counsel.
- Complete proposals and finalize gift arrangements for bequests, charitable gift annuities, charitable remainder trusts, charitable lead trusts, pooled income funds, and gifts of complex assets.
- Manage the department budget and meet the projected financial goals of the department.
- Collaborate with finance staff as needed to ensure compliance with all state insurance filings, gift annuity reserve requirements, etc.
- Contribute to the nationwide development team and serve on the Global Development Senior Leaders Team.
- Lead regular and ongoing analysis of the planned giving program’s key metrics and evaluate the strength of our planned giving pipeline of revenue.

QUALIFICATIONS
- 10+ years of non-profit development including with matrixed organization(s) in the disease space, special event fundraising, training and strategic management experience. 5 years preferred in a leadership management/supervisory capacity.
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Expertise in planned giving vehicles, current trends in philanthropy, and estate and financial planning for individuals, including tax implications of charitable giving.
- Proven ability to solicit and close planned and outright gifts.
- Excellent project management and problem-solving skills with the ability to manage multiple, simultaneous projects involving cross-functional teams with persistent attention to detail while maintaining a global view of the situation.
- Thorough understanding of and experience in planned gift prospect identification and moves management within a development setting.
- Strong analytical skills to drive strategic development of department.
- Successful management of multi-disciplinary teams for development projects.
- Strong presentation delivery, conveying ideas, and instructing effectively.
- Strong writing, research and problem-solving skills.
- Proven track record of experience supervising, coaching and developing staff.
- Ability to work and make judgments independently and take initiative.
- Proficiency with technology to support the development process and ideal user experience, specifically related to CRM platforms and business tools
- Direct experience in managing large fundraising campaigns, including campaign development, service and support activities.
- Ability to analyze and integrate information from relevant sources and respond to changing circumstances and priorities.
- Proven track record of collaborative leadership, successful management, coaching and development of staff.
- Desire to work in a team-based environment; ability to work with others to achieve goals.
- Excellent written, verbal, presentation/communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to understand and work within a complex organizational structure.
- Ability to creatively find solutions to problems and analyze feedback to create best practices by partnering with key stakeholders.
- Outstanding influencing skills to generate buy-in and create win/win situations
- Highly efficient in time management and ability to meet deadlines under pressure.
- Estimated 50% travel is required. The work setting is in home-based office.
Target Salary - $165k - $195k
