Position Summary

Rewiring America is seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Associate General Counsel, Compliance to join our legal team. This newly-created position in our growing Legal department combines high-level strategic responsibilities with hands-on legal work.  

The Associate GC, Compliance works cross-functionally to shape our strategy and support our effective navigation of Rewiring America’s role as a 501(c)(3) and a federal government grant sub-recipient.  

What You’ll Do

  • Develop, implement, and manage compliance programs and initiatives to ensure adherence to legal and regulatory requirements;
  • Develop and maintain relationships with all external stakeholders, including government entities, public and private supporters, and non-profit partners. 
  • Conduct audits and  internal investigations to identify and address potential areas of non-compliance
  • Provide advice and guidance on procurement, reporting, and other obligations related to Rewiring America’s role as a federal grant subrecipient 
  • Provide advice and guidance on lobbying reporting and compliance 
  • Review and update company policies and procedures to ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations
  • Develop and deliver effective compliance training, on-demand documentation, and communications to integrate ethical decision-making into day-to-day work
  • Maintain accurate and thorough records of compliance-related activities
  • Conduct periodic risk assessments
  • Handle internal investigations and manage external relationships with regulators and government grantee recipient 
  • Stay up-to-date on industry best practices and emerging trends in compliance
  • Provide support in responding to legal and regulatory inquiries and investigations
  • Draft, negotiate, and review complex agreements to ensure alignment with our business objectives and mitigate potential risks

The Associate General Counsel, Compliance joins a team that operates with a sense of urgency and a track record of success across the fields of science, technology, business, policy, and politics. While working with our clients, we focus on getting to “yes” in an efficient and effective manner, with minimal risk and maximal fun.  

The successful candidate demonstrates enthusiasm for making electrification easy, and models excellence and integrity in all they do. Their strength is in explaining complicated regulations and requirements to internal product teams, and complicated financial and technology products to regulators and stakeholders. They view relationships with their clients and other stakeholders as key to their success and build and maintain trusted relationships with those individuals and their teams.  The selected candidate will also possess the following Core and Preferred qualifications and characteristics:

Core

  • Minimum of 8 years of experience practicing law with a focus on government contracts and non-profit compliance 
  • Creative problem solver who combines an ability to navigate ambiguity with a sense of humor
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills. You are able to advocate for a position while maintaining a collaborative and open-minded approach
  • Can-do attitude and willingness to roll up your sleeves, and a desire to get into the details of the business and legal and regulatory work of the company - no job too big or small.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational and time management skills, able to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines
  • Strong ethics and integrity
  • Experience conducting internal investigations and audits
  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school and membership in good standing with a state bar

Preferred

  • Excellent references demonstrating a strong track record in supporting 501(c)(3) organizations, reducing risk exposure and translating regulatory and compliance requirements into operational best practices.
  • Content knowledge in climate, renewable energy, and/or building electrification.
  • Extra bonus points if you have experience with the environmental commodities market and regulations, such as Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs), carbon credits and allowances, global Emissions Allowances (EACs), or low carbon fuel standard credits

Compensation and Benefits

The salary range for this position is $130,000-$170,000 commensurate with experience and qualifications. Comprehensive benefits package that includes 100% employer-paid health, dental, and vision insurance for employees (and their families). Employees are able to enroll in 401k retirement plans and are eligible for a 3% automatic contribution and up to a 3% employer match on 401k contributions. Employees are also eligible for pre-tax transportation benefits. Employees will receive 160 hours of vacation time, 80 hours of health leave, up to 2 days of casual leave, and 20 hours of volunteer leave annually. Employees will also receive 11 paid holidays throughout the calendar year (13 days during Presidential and Congressional elections). We have an office closure between Christmas and New Year. Employees are eligible for 12 weeks of paid family and medical leave after 90 days of employment. Regular, full-time employees and part-time employees are eligible to take up to sixteen weeks of parental leave, in all cases related to birth, adoption, or foster care starting from the first day of employment.
