Associate Counsel

Overview
As a member of the legal team, the Assistant Counsel, Legal Affairs will be focused on supporting policy development, employment matters, investigations and litigation as well as on enhancing and managing MLS compliance programs. Compliance work will include staying abreast of current regulations, proactively identifying gaps in existing policy frameworks, and collaborating across the organization to create, plan, and execute innovative solutions. In addition, this position will manage dispute resolution and advise senior league and club executives.
Responsibilities
- Develop, implement, and maintain risk management controls and associated processes, policies, and documents across legal risk areas.
- Assist with drafting and implementing league rules/operations manuals across business areas, with a focus on Matchday departments, and ensuring compliance with league rules, standards and policies.
- Review, develop and update company policies, including those relating to document retention, anti-corruption and others.
- Assist in managing various employment law issues
- Assist with investigations, litigation discovery and subpoena issues.

Qualifications
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree and J.D.
- 3+ years of experience at a leading law firm and/or in-house legal department; compliance and employment law experience preferred
Required Skills
- Highly analytical with strong attention to detail
- High-level of commitment to a quality work product and organizational ethics, integrity and compliance
- Strong writing, interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively communicate, both verbally and in writing
- Demonstrated decision making and solution-oriented problem-solving skills
- Ability to multi-task and meet deadlines with minimal supervision
- Proficiency in Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook
Desired Skills
- Knowledge of Spanish or French languages (business proficiency)
- Knowledge and interest in the sport of soccer

Major League Soccer offers a competitive starting base salary of $130,000 - $150,000 based on individual qualifications, market financials, and operational business needs.
