Purpose of Position
The Department of Energy & Petroleum Engineering (EPE) at the University of North Dakota (UND) invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position. We seek a dynamic and innovative educator and researcher passionate about energy and petroleum engineering with a strong commitment to advancing both teaching and research excellence.
The successful candidate will contribute to student learning and engagement, curriculum development, research innovation, and industry collaboration while supporting the department’s ABET-accredited B.S. degree program in Petroleum Engineering.
Duties & Responsibilities
- The successful applicant will receive a contract with an approximate distribution of 40% teaching, 40% research, and 20% service effort. UND and the College of Engineering & Mines value diverse perspectives and seek applicants to help students succeed. The successful candidate will demonstrate outstanding promise for establishing a sustainable research program that will attract external funds and be aligned with the UND LEADS Strategic Plan. Teach graduate/undergraduate courses in energy and petroleum engineering, including on-campus (in-person)/online courses and both term-based and self-paced asynchronous online courses.
- Incorporate modern industry practices, AI/data analytics, and emerging energy technologies into coursework.
- Advise and mentor both undergraduate and graduate students.
- Work collaboratively with other EPE Department faculty to achieve consistent and high-quality learning environments.
- Advise and mentor graduate students; direct graduate theses and independent study projects.
- Establish a solid and productive research program in energy and petroleum engineering, including seeking extramural funding to support individual and collaborative projects. Serve as a catalyst for attracting and supporting graduate students in the EPE Program.
- Encouraged to conduct interdisciplinary research with UND’s Cybersecurity, AI, and Machine Learning initiatives. -
Required Competencies
- Expertise in reservoir characterization, geostatistics, AI/machine learning
- Demonstrated ability or potential to effectively teach and mentor students in a university setting.
- Experience mentoring students.
- Strong communication skills and commitment to student success.
- Ability to develop an independent, externally funded research program.
- Adaptability in teaching methods, including online and hybrid course delivery.
Minimum Requirements
- Ph.D. in Petroleum Engineering or a closely related field
- At least one year of industry experience in an engineering role related to energy or petroleum fields
- Background in the areas of reservoir characterization, petrophysics, geophysics, and geomodelling.
- Record of peer-reviewed publications in quality journals.
- Successful completion of a Criminal History Background Check

Preferred Qualifications
- Teaching experience at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
- Field experience with hydrocarbons and alternative subsurface fluids (e.g., hydrogen, compressed air, natural gas liquids).
- Experience in developing high-impact, experiential learning curricula.
- Record of involvement in seeking extramural funding
- Experience working on multi-disciplinary research teams
- Passed the Fundamentals of Engineering exam or earned a licensed Professional Engineer.
