Purpose of Position

The Department of History & American Indian Studies at the University of North Dakota invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor of American Indian Studies to begin in August 2025. We seek a colleague who will continue our department’s commitments to teaching excellence, furthering scholarship on Indigenous peoples of the Northern Great Plains, and strengthen and build new strategic partnerships with tribal communities in our region.

Duties & Responsibilities

The successful candidate will teach five three-credit courses in American Indian Studies (AIS) and a one-credit Humanities Seminar per year. The offerings will be a combination of in-person on-campus and asynchronous online courses. Desirable teaching areas include introductory AIS courses; an interdisciplinary Humanities Seminar; tribal histories of the Northern Great Plains; and Preserving Tribal Heritage. The successful candidate also will maintain an active research agenda and participate in shared faculty governance and service. The University of North Dakota is supportive of dual-career assistance both within the University and the local community. Please contact UND's Recruiting Manager, Hannah Whalen (Hannah.Whalen@UND.edu) to explore dual-career opportunities.

Established in 1883, the University of North Dakota is the oldest research university in the state. A flagship university with a strong liberal arts core, UND is classified by the Carnegie Foundation as having high research activity. It was recently ranked among the top 100 public and top 25 most innovative universities in the country by U.S. News and World Report and is widely regarded as among the best universities in the Northern Plains region. UND enrolls over 14,000 students.

The university is located in Grand Forks, a vibrant college town of over 57,000 people located on the border between North Dakota and Minnesota. Short commutes, a great public school system, high quality medical facilities, low crime, ample parks and theaters, and a cost of living below that found in large American cities are some of the reasons that Grand Forks has been ranked as one of the top 5 Best Small College Towns.
