As an Assistant General Counsel, you will support key legal functions, focusing on strategic aspects of the company including products, transactions, and compliance. You'll collaboratively work with teams including Business Development, Product, People Ops, and Marketing to help facilitate business-centric initiatives. Your role includes helping support product development, contract negotiations (both commercial and vendor engagements), and advising on compliance including product, privacy/AI, and People Ops. 
In this role, you'll collaborate across departments to help find practical business solutions, streamline processes, influence the future direction of our product platform, and help the company achieve its mission of helping every family leave their legacy.
About You:
You are a practical business-first legal professional with strong experience in contracts, product counseling, and data including privacy/AI, and employment. You’re skilled at identifying potential risks and finding solutions that align with the company’s business goals. You work well with different functional teams, collaboratively helping them achieve their goals while ensuring legal compliance.
Your ability to balance legal requirements with business needs makes you a key collaborative partner in helping drive the company’s success.

About the Role:

  • Support Business Development and Product with deal negotiations and contract drafting, review, and implementation
  • Support People Ops with compliance with employment laws
  • Support end-to-end product development lifecycle (innovation, implementation, and maintenance of product offerings)
  • Support data strategy including privacy compliance and AI focus
  • Support corporate and product compliance (contracting, policies, enterprise risk, management, etc.)
  • Opportunities to get involved in industry advocacy and legislative affairs 
  • Collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders to identify and implement solutions on day-to-day initiatives and product expansion; represent the legal perspective and help identify risk mitigation measures to enable unimpeded growth
  • Implement strategic and operational solutions to achieve company-wide goals based on broader team input and general legal direction  
  • Collaborate on building enterprise-grade processes and systems to help enable and promote scalable growth
  • Provide counsel, advice, and recommendations on business and legal items in consideration of company goals
  • Legal operations including contract management and managing outside counsel

Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school 
  • 10+ years of legal experience in transactional, product counseling, or related fields (in-house experience is a plus)
  • Strong experience in contract drafting, review, and negotiations
  • Experience with regulatory compliance and risk management
  • Knowledge of corporate governance, product development, and policy implementation
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
  • Ability to provide practical, business-focused legal advice
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with experience working across teams
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and projects in a fast-paced environment
  • Experience working with and managing outside counsel and external subject matter experts

  • Having previously worked in a SaaS company and/or high-growth tech startup
  • Experience helping scale companies through operationalizing processes and systems

  • Compensation - Salary + Equity: Our salary range for this position is $163,000 - $200,000, in addition to compensation we also include an employee equity package as a component of our offer along with other benefits and perks outlined below.
