Asset Management National Specialty Leader (remote allowed)

Brown and Caldwell (BC), a leading environmental engineering and consulting firm, is currently seeking an Asset Management (AM) National Specialty Leader (NSL). The AM NSL will inform the company vision and strategy for this specialty within the Utility Performance (UP) Practice in collaboration with other UP Specialty Leaders including Operations and Maintenance Consulting, Management Consulting, and Enterprise Technology Consulting. The AM NSL will ensure alignment to the company strategy, the UP national practice, BC’s Digital Solutions (DS) strategy and business unit growth plans. In this role, you will also be responsible for informing and developing approaches to support market growth, developing talent, and delivering high quality services and solutions in collaborative partnership with other UP specialties and BC technical practices in a way that continues to develop our market and technical differentiation from that of our competitors. The AM specialty practice area includes client asset management program evaluation, development (strategy, framework, approach, processes and tools), documentation and implementation support as well as asset renewal and replacement planning and risk evaluation and management services.

What you will do:

Practice Specialty Leadership

  • Create a vision and priorities for specialty area in alignment with other UP specialty areas and to inform the overall national practice strategy.
  • Ensure the collective knowledge of the specialty is technically rigorous, effectively documented, regularly updated, and disseminated across the company through communications and effective access to specialty content (business development and delivery standards, templates, tools, guidelines, and approaches) on the UP Practice Portal.
  • As member of national practice leadership team, work closely with NPL and other NSLs to advance the practice strategy nationally and working with regional and area practice leads to promote technical differentiation.
  • Support development and application of innovative solutions, including strategic research and development efforts and engagement with the National Technical/Innovation Leader (NTIL) in the practice.
  • Organize, grow, and lead a team of subject matter experts to support growth of the specialty through talent development, continued specialty content development on the UP Practice Portal, and ensuring active communication and collaboration within the specialty while maintaining oversight and guidance as an active leader.

Project Delivery Quality and Efficiency

  • Oversee prioritization, development, and continuous improvement of national specialty content (business development and delivery standards, templates, tools, guidelines, and approaches), governance, and consistent usage by specialty affiliated members for efficient, high-quality execution of specialty elements. 
  • On strategic and complex projects, engage directly with delivery team throughout project life cycle, including early concept development, solution selection, project design, execution, and risk mitigation.
  • Ensure relevant Subject Matter Specialists (SMS) engage effectively with project teams to apply consistent technical approaches, risk management, and quality delivery. 
  • Support national sharing of resources to match top technical talent with strategic projects, working closely with national and regional practice leaders - getting the “right people” on the “right projects” through collaboration with Regional Directors of Technical Services, Regional Practice Leaders, Area Practice Leaders and business unit delivery teams.

Client Development and Sales

  • In close association with Client Service Teams (CST’s), assume Client-facing Technical Leadership roles with strategic clients, including trusted advisor for clients and CSTs. 
  • Directly engage with clients to build relationships, assess needs, and develop technical solutions.   
  • Bring technical insights from engagement with client peers/network.
  • Understand our competition in terms of strategic direction of their approach to the specialty area, and their technical focus, staff, strengths, and weaknesses. Equip business units with winning technical strategies.
  • Work with business unit leadership to build capacity and capability to deliver on business unit strategic goals for capturing and delivering work in priority services related to the specialty.  

Knowledge & Technical Standards

  • Create efficient, high-quality practice execution through development and consistent application of national business development and delivery standards, templates, tools, guidelines, best practices, model work scopes, and governance. Encourage consistent usage by practice members. 
  • Oversee implementation of Quality Fundamentals and SMS governance, in partnership with Specialty Leaders responsible for SMS badging and performance. 

Talent Development

  • Lead implementation and adjudication of SMS governance, systems (i.e., "badging “) and plans for talent development to grow and develop a high performing “bench” of technical practitioners.
  • Set a foundation for SMS engagement in projects to develop staff by direct mentoring and training on the project.
  • Lead continued development of Specialty team, identifying and cultivating new members and helping existing team members advance their SMS Level. 
  • Support recruiting (identifying needs and candidates, informing decisions), communicate perceived gaps and needs with BU operational leads, and support hiring plans into business planning efforts.
  • Responsible for development of technical training and mentoring program within the specialty.

BC Brand and Industry Leadership

  • Expand recognition in the industry for relevant specialty. Lead representation of the BC brand as industry thought-leader, including strategic messaging, peer-reviewed and other publications, and team member visibility.
  • Work with practice leadership team and operations leaders to develop national and regional conference plans. Champion strategic national conferences, presentation strategies, and selection of technical attendees.
  • Support local conferences, workshops, and other means of visibility in strategic geographies, in coordination with Regional Practice Leaders, operations leaders, and CSTs.
  • Work closely with Corporate Communications on internal and industry communications, digital media, and branding.
  • Stay current with technology and market trends and inform annual business and periodic strategic planning processes.

Required Qualifications:

  • B.S. in the areas of engineering, physical sciences, biological sciences, or related field with an emphasis related to specialty role.
  • Minimum of 15 years of increasingly responsible professional experience in the environmental services or water utility and/or consulting industry required; minimum of 4 years of providing consulting services.
  • Demonstrated understanding of water and wastewater utility asset management practices and programs.
  • Knowledge and experience with industry asset management standards and frameworks:
    • ISO 55000 (series).
    • Institute of Asset Management BSI PAS 55.
    • IPWEA - International Infrastructure Management Manual.
    • Experience implementing and advancing asset management program maturity.
    • Experience developing asset management program documentation (e.g. charters, development roadmaps, and strategic and tactical asset management plans).
    • Demonstrated understanding and experience with both vertical and linear asset condition assessment practices (approaches and methodologies).
    • Demonstrated understanding of and experience with asset data and information management practices and associated systems of record.
    • Demonstrated understanding of and experience with asset risk assessment and management practices.
    • Demonstrated understanding of and experience in developing asset renewal and replacement forecasts and schedules.
    • Demonstrated understanding of the interdependency between asset management and capital improvement plan/program development.
    • Demonstrated understanding of the interdependency between asset management programs and operations and maintenance practices and programs.
    • Demonstrated ability to effectively relate to and communicate across a broad range of organizational levels and functions.
    • Demonstrated ability to coordinate across and work with internal or client delivery teams.
    • Excellent collaboration and team development skills.
    • Extensive experience in serving clients, collaboration and building consensus, working with stakeholder groups, sales and marketing, branding, and business growth.
    • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written) for technical and non-technical audiences.
    • Strong project and/or program management skills.
    • Proven success in technical presentation, proposal writing, and public presentations.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • M.S. in the areas of engineering, physical sciences, biological sciences, or related field with an emphasis related to specialty role.
    • Professional registration.

      Ideally, you’ll also have one or more of the following:

      • Asset management certifications:
        • AWAM/PWAM (BAMI-I).
        • CAMP (PEMAC).
      • Experience with asset management supporting technology tools and applications including CMMS/EAMS, GIS, and SCADA.
      • Knowledge and experience in organizational change management practices.
      • Desire and growth mindset for building collaborative relationships, technical expertise, and sales.
      • Experience working in a fast-paced team environment and ability to adapt quickly to change.
      • Creativity to generate attention-grabbing ideas that contribute value to our clients.

        Salary Range: The anticipated starting pay range for this position is based on the employee’s primary work location and may be more or less depending upon skills, experience, and education.  These ranges may be modified in the future.

        Location A: $160,000 - $190,000

        Location B: $176,000 - $210,000

        Location C: $193,000 - $230,000
