Admissions Counselor

Position: Western Colorado University invites applications for the full-time position of Admissions  Counselor.  The position reports to the Director of Admissions, works closely with other admissions staff, marketing, and various other departments, and is responsible for recruiting prospective students to Western Colorado University from the assigned territory.  This position will be located on the Gunnison Campus or in Colorado Springs/Pueblo area but will travel both throughout Colorado and nationally.

Responsibilities:  The Admissions Counselor is a professional admissions position that integrates three different functions within the admissions marketing process:

  • Target marketing (customer research and database analytics, marketing strategy and communications)
  • Admissions operations (business planning, applications processing and workflow management)
  • Enrollment management (recruitment, financial aid and admissions counseling)

The Admissions Counselor generates leads, develops marketing channels, and conducts other network-building/recruiting/marketing analysis and efforts. Once admitted, the Admission Counselor tracks and proactively conducts targeted outreach/marketing efforts to convert accepted applicants into matriculated students. The Admissions Counselor is responsible for counseling on all types of inquiries received by the college which include telephone, direct mail, internet, and walk-ins, and also serves as an internal and external recruiter. This positions reviews submitted applications and admits qualified students.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Valid US Driver’s License and good driving record required.
  • Excellent written and oral communication and customer service skills.
  • Self-starter with the ability to work independently and as a team player.
  • Knowledge of marketing, promotions, brand awareness and sales.
  • Ability to work irregular hours including some nights, weekends and holidays, and to travel extensively throughout the state of Colorado as well as out of state.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and spreadsheet software.
  • Experience managing and maintaining database systems.
  • Successful experience building positive working relationships with a wide range of work styles and abilities.

Preferred Qualifications: Includes all Minimum Qualifications.

  • Ability to think creatively and skilled at innovation.
  • Experience in higher education, CRM-based processes, and territory management.
  • One year+ of admissions counselor experience or related experience in an institution of higher education.
  • Experience working with culturally diverse populations.

Compensation: Salary will range from $50,000-$55,000 per year. This position is FLSA exempt. Western offers an excellent benefits package including shared premiums for a comprehensive health insurance plan, dental insurance, retirement plan, life insurance, and other insurance options. After one year of employment, Western provides free tuition for dependents enrolled full time in undergraduate programs for up to four years.
