Position Overview:

The Dissertation Chair plays a pivotal role in guiding doctoral candidates through the dissertation process, ensuring academic rigor, research integrity, and successful completion of their degree.

The primary purpose of the Dissertation Chair is to mentor, support, and evaluate doctoral students as they develop and execute their dissertation research. The Dissertation Chair serves as the lead faculty member overseeing the dissertation, ensuring alignment with institutional standards and scholarly expectations.

The Dissertation Chair significantly influences student success by fostering critical thinking, academic independence, and research excellence. Their guidance ensures that students produce meaningful, high-quality scholarship that contribute to their field. Dissertation Chairs strengthen the institution’s academic reputation by upholding rigorous research standards and supporting timely degree completion.

Key Responsibilities:

Dissertation Oversight and Research Guidance

Provide expert guidance to doctoral candidates in designing and conducting methodologically sound research.

• Offer detailed feedback on qualitative and/or quantitative research methods, ensuring rigor and alignment with disciplinary standards.
• Support students in refining research questions, selecting appropriate methodologies, and integrating theoretical frameworks.
• Review and evaluate dissertation content, ensuring clarity, coherence, and scholarly contribution.

Committee Leadership and Student Support

Maintain consistent communication with candidates, ensuring adherence to the doctoral program handbook and university policies.

• Prepare students for the oral dissertation defense, providing coaching and constructive feedback.
• Attend and facilitate virtual dissertation defenses, ensuring a fair and rigorous evaluation process.

Institutional Compliance and Ethical Standards

Guide students through Institutional Review Board (IRB) application processes, ensuring compliance with ethical research standards.

• Approve IRB applications before submission, ensuring all necessary documentation is complete and compliant.
• Uphold academic integrity and research ethics in all dissertation-related activities.

Faculty Engagement and Professional Expectations

Adhere to department expectations, policies, and best practices for dissertation supervision.

• Stay current with developments in organizational leadership research, methodologies, and higher education standards.
• Collaborate with faculty and department leadership to improve dissertation processes and program effectiveness.

Location Policy:

Remote work from any of the following states – Alabama, Arizona, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Minnesota, Nevada, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and Wisconsin.

Required Qualifications:

• Must have one of the following degrees: Ph.D., Ed.D., DBA, DPA, DHA, Psy.D. or DSL
• Demonstrated expertise in the field of organizational leadership, educational leadership, or related discipline, with experience in teaching.
• Knowledge of research methodologies, academic standards, and best practices in dissertation advisement.
• Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to mentor and support doctoral candidates, collaborate with faculty, and facilitate a constructive dissertation process.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Earned doctorate (Ed.D., Ph.D., DM, or equivalent) in organizational leadership, educational leadership, or a related field, along with relevant certifications or specialized expertise.
• Proficiency in innovative teaching methodologies, research facilitation, and familiarity with learning management systems (LMS) and dissertation-related technologies.
• Proven experience mentoring and supervising doctoral students through the dissertation process, including research design, data analysis, and academic writing.

Work Environment:

A remote adjunct work environment is a flexible, virtual setting where instructors deliver course content, engage with students, and fulfill academic responsibilities from a remote location. This environment typically relies on digital communication tools, learning management systems (LMS), and virtual collaboration platforms to facilitate teaching and interaction.

Compensation:

This course is paid at a rate of $30.00 per hour, with contract hours determined by the number of assigned students. Please see the full Adjunct Compensation Policy for details.
