As a Substation Engineering Intern, you will be supporting the work of designing the physical layout and electrical systems of projects on high-voltage substations at voltages from 12kV to 500kV with the goal of providing excellent quality work for our clients.

This is a full-time, 10-week internship that begins in early June 2025.  Work may be done remotely from any U.S. location, or hybrid from our Reston, VA office.   At this time, we are unable to provide relocation nor housing assistance for this internship.

As a Substation Physical Engineering Intern, you will:

  • Assist engineers and designers in the physical and electrical design of substation upgrade projects

  • Review and update substation layout drawings including One-Line Diagrams, Electrical Arrangements and Sections, Grounding Plans, Conduit Plans, Lightning Protection Plans, Control Cubicle Arrangements, and Low-Voltage AC/DC Wiring Diagrams

  • Perform AC Systems Calculations and Design

  • Development of Equipment Specification and Selection based on Clients Criteria

  • Development of Bill of Materials based on Design Criteria

Interns may or should have:

  • The ability to work with and understand technical concepts, while also being able to communicate them to non-technical personnel

  • Basic knowledge of the electric grid

  • Strong organizational skills

  • Strong skills and capabilities in Microsoft Office (specifically Word and Excel)

Basic Qualification:

  • Currently enrolled in a bachelor’s degree program studying Electrical Engineering, with an anticipated graduation of August 2025 or later.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of power systems

  • Advanced user of Microsoft products, specifically Word and Excel

Pay Range - There are multiple factors that are considered in determining final pay for a position, including, but not limited to, relevant work experience, skills, certifications and competencies that align to the specified role, geographic location, education and certifications as well as contract provisions regarding labor categories that are specific to the position.

The pay range for this position based on full-time employment is:

$32,591.00 - $55,405.00
