Position Description

Anoka County Community Social Services and Behavioral Health has two openings for Temporary Associate Social Worker – Peer Support Specialist positions. These positions will be housed within the Adult Mental Health unit. The Associate Social Worker – Peer Support Specialist will work closely with clients, other social workers, case managers, employment consultants and economic assistance specialists to assist clients in applying for medical assistance, work and/or financial assistance programs as needed. This position requires candidates who are compassionate, supportive, detail-oriented and possess strong communication skills.

This is a temporary, non-exempt, hybrid position. Interviews will take place the week of March 10th, 2025 for those selected to move forward in the hiring process.

Pay & Benefits

  • Salary: $29.24 to $35.08 per hour
  • 2025 Anoka County Salary Schedule Grade 32: $29.24 to $40.92 per hour.

Work Location

  • This position will work at Anoka County Government Center, located at 2100 3rd Ave, Anoka, MN 55303.
  • This position may be eligible for flexible work arrangements, including hybrid work, with some days working remotely and some days working in the office.
  • This position will work in the community as needed, in client homes, and may be involved in transporting clients to activities or resources in the community.
  • Expected work hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

Job Duties and Responsibilities
These examples are not all inclusive and are intended to be illustrative of primary responsibilities of an Anoka County Associate Social Worker.

  • Meet and work with clients in office-based or community-based settings.
  • Communicate effectively with clients, providers, agency staff, and the public.
  • Lead by example with coping strategies that have been helpful in the client’s own recovery.
  • Facilitate peer support group on a weekly basis to provide clients individualized, ongoing guidance, coaching and support.
  • Assist clients in utilizing developing and asserting any of their active treatment or services plans.
  • Serve as a recovery agent by providing and advocating for any effective recovery-based services and/or community resources that will aid the client in his/her daily living.
  • Provide clients training for using personal development tools/skills and community resources in a group or individual setting as needed.
  • Assist clients in building social skills in the community that will enhance functioning.
  • Offer clients encouragement during times of crisis.
  • Collaborate with case managers, family members or significant others involved in the treatment/recovery of clients as needed.
  • Observe the rules of confidentiality related to clinical information and treatment when dealing with internal and external agencies or individuals.
  • Advocate on behalf clients with mental/behavior health or substance abuse problems to assist in reducing social stigma.
  • Assist clients in completing medical assistance and other financial assistance program paperwork or referring them to appropriate resources.
  • Complete and maintain case notes and records.
  • Organize and prioritize tasks and manage workflows for the position and performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Requirements:

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Needed

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education or experience, substituted on a year-for-year basis.
  • Valid driver’s license and vehicle available for business use.

Knowledge, Skills, and Preferred Abilities Needed

  • Bachelor’s degree in psychology or social work.
  • Certification and/or registration as Certified Peer Support Specialist.
  • One year (2,080 annual hours) or more of job-related experience of job-related experience in human services, social services, public assistance, or closely related field.
  • Experience working with individuals struggling with mental illness or substance abuse.
  • Ability to facilitate group using established standardized mental health processes.
  • Familiarity with local community resources.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, experience with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Skilled in problem-solving, critical thinking and effective time management.

Physical Demands and Work Conditions

  • Standard office and community environment.
  • Vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus, such as to work on computers. Ability to see colors, shades, and brightness.
  • Hearing abilities required for general and phone communication, signals, and machine sounds.
  • Assignments are sedentary, occasionally alternating between sitting, standing, walking, crouching, and kneeling as required to perform job responsibilities. Frequent wrist and finger manipulation to complete computer work. 
  • Occasional lifting of 10-20 lbs. 
  • Equipment used includes computers, phones, and standard office equipment 
  • Travel within the community as needed. Travel between work sites may require driving a county vehicle and/or a personal vehicle.
