Staff Attorney

Job Description:
RMI seeks a Staff Attorney to join its growing team to handle general U.S. based corporate, contractual and other transactional law matters. This position is for an articulate, eager, and highly qualified attorney with a minimum 7 yearsâ experience who is passionate about the energy transition, wants to help create positive impact, and thrives in a team-oriented, fast-paced, and agile work environment. Â
Position Overview:Â
The Staff Attorney will be a full-time in-house lawyer who will report to the Legal Director. The ideal candidate is a highly self-motivated, business-minded, solutions-oriented attorney who enjoys operating autonomously and can comfortably manage multiple projects and competing priorities. This person brings systems thinking, extraordinary judgment, and interpersonal skills to a role that will collaborate closely with others throughout the organization.  Â
Key Responsibilities:Â
Work across various program areas to support them with all types of complex legal needs, including but not limited to drafting, reviewing, and negotiating contracts and providing guidance about how to structure legal entities, relationships and transactions
Provide legal advice and support on applicable laws, regulations, and policies, including but not limited to those related to nonprofit operations, governance, and compliance; intellectual property; data privacy; lobbying, and anti-corruption
Manage and mitigate legal risks by drafting and implementing company policies, procedures and legal templates
Work with the finance team on compliance issues and protocolÂ
Collaborate with the subgrants team to ensure all outgoing subaward agreements comply with the original agreements between RMI and the funderÂ
Coordinate with outside law firms across a variety of practice areas and jurisdictions Â
Perform other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications:Â
JD degree from accredited law school and licensed to practice law in at least one U.S. state bar
7 yearsâ experience, preferably in a general law practice with expertise in contract, general corporate and transactional lawÂ
Excellent verbal and writing skills, and the ability to simplify complicated legal issues and languageÂ
Whole systems approach to problem solvingÂ
Additional Qualifications:Â
Experience in or knowledge of nonprofit law, corporate entity formations, intellectual property, or global privacy law preferable
The ability to quickly master and integrate legal, business, technical, and practical analysisÂ
Desire and ability to work independently as well as in a team settingÂ
