The Risk Management Centre of Excellence (CoE) is a strategic first line of defense business partner supporting Canadian leadership in meeting our Client for Life goals by providing comprehensive understanding of operational risk and supporting the design of effective solutions to manage risk within the business.  

We partner with Canadian leadership, first line of defense Business Unit Risk Officers, and second line of defense Risk and Compliance stakeholders to assess operational risks, enhance control frameworks, educate business on risk management, provide oversight on risk policy requirements, and ultimately enable the business to evolve while maintaining risk within appetite. 

The scope of the team is broad, as our internal clients include all business areas supporting Group Benefits, Group Retirement Services, Client Experience Office and Individual Insurance and Wealth. As Consultant, Operational Risk, and reporting to the Manager, Operational Risk, you will support risk activities across multiple portfolios in Canada and will be a key point of contact for Canadian execution managers and second line of defense stakeholders to identify, assess and manage operational risks within the portfolio.    

What will you do?

  • Assess risk and control effectiveness within assigned portfolios, identify opportunities to improve risk management
  • Develop reporting dashboards for risk issues and other risk related activities for the BU leadership
  • Organize, prepare and coordinate various risk committees and forums
  • Support risk assessments to measure risk exposures, identify internal control weaknesses, improve the control environment, and minimize the risk of loss events
  • Support the roll-out of new/changed risk and compliance requirements by identifying the impact to assigned business areas and supporting business partners in the design and maintenance of processes/controls to meet these requirements
  • Provide risk consulting expertise and support risk reviews for key business projects, digital initiatives, and process changes
  • Support recommendations on effective control design and operational risk management best practices
  • Monitor and track status of risk issues and activities in portfolio scorecard

What will you need to succeed?

  • Undergraduate degree or diploma in Business or another related field of study
  • 3 – 5 years of experience in risk management, regulatory compliance, or internal audit; experience in the financial or insurance industry is an asset
  • Exposure to risk management practices including risk assessment, risk monitoring, control design and control effectiveness
  • Experience in process mapping as well as identification and assessment of process risks and supporting controls
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize many competing demands
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with experience presenting to business partners
  • Strong analytical, problem resolution and consensus-building skills
  • Proactive and highly motivated to take initiative and manage unstructured activities

What will be nice to have?

  • Experience in risk management or related functions (e.g., compliance, process improvement)
  • Exposure to project, program and/or portfolio management
  • Certification in risk management and/or process improvement

The Base Pay range is for the primary location for which the job is posted.  It may vary depending on the work location of the successful candidate or other factors.  In addition to Base Pay, eligible Sun Life employees participate in various incentive plans, payment under which is discretionary and subject to individual and company performance.  Certain sales focused roles have sales incentive plans based on individual or group sales results.
