The Opportunity
As our next Nuclear Safety Engineer, you will play a critical role in ensuring that nuclear safety requirements are fully met throughout the project. Working alongside the Nuclear Safety Lead and as part of the Nuclear Safety Group, this role focuses on achieving world-class safety standards, leveraging best practices drawn from industry leaders and benchmarking programs. The individual will represent the operator in key nuclear safety activities, such as the development of core designs, safety cases, operating rules, and the emergency response scheme, ensuring all safety protocols are seamlessly integrated into the project’s lifecycle.

What you will be doing
The role of a Nuclear Safety Engineer is pivotal in ensuring that safety requirements are met throughout the lifecycle of a project, with a focus on adhering to best practices and maintaining high safety standards. You will work closely with various teams to manage safety cases, reactor operations, and nuclear material safeguards. Your technical expertise will support both the operational side and safety governance to mitigate risks and ensure compliance with regulations.
- Support the development and ongoing maintenance of Operational and Hazard technical specifications, offering safety case advice and expertise.
- Oversee the implementation of the nuclear safety case, contributing as a key stakeholder in the project.
- Provide expert advice on reactor physics and assist with physics testing for project needs.
- Monitor and manage nuclear safeguards, ensuring accurate accounting of nuclear materials.
- Challenge and guide technical decision-making to prioritise nuclear safety.
- Provide strong governance and oversight for all nuclear safety-related matters within the project.
Who you are
As our next Nuclear Safety Engineer, you will possess a solid understanding of nuclear power operations and the ability to effectively communicate and collaborate across various teams. You will have experience working to strict deadlines and budgets, demonstrating pragmatism in decision-making. With strong computer literacy and a clear grasp of management systems, you will work efficiently within both the details and the broader context of the project.
- Strong understanding of nuclear power operations.
- Proven communication skills with the ability to engage diverse stakeholders.
- Capable of meeting deadlines and managing projects within allocated budgets.
- Demonstrates pragmatism in approaching challenges and solutions.
- Excellent computer literacy and understanding of relevant management systems.
- Able to navigate both detailed aspects and broader contexts.
- HND or equivalent in a science or engineering field, with industry experience; a STEM degree is desirable.
- Experience interacting with nuclear regulators or a highly regulated industry
- Background in light water nuclear power plants
- Familiarity with working in a project-based environment.
