Wealthsimple is on a mission to help everyone achieve financial freedom, no matter who they are or how much they have. Using smart technology, Wealthsimple takes financial services that are often confusing and expensive and makes them clear and low-cost. We’re the company behind some of Canada's leading digital financial products, and are growing faster than ever. We value great work and great ideas — not ego. Read our Culture Manual and learn more about how we work.
Wealthsimple’s editorial arm, led by the former Editorial Director of GQ Magazine, aims to use the very best writers, illustrators, and producers to become the definitive media outlet covering the exciting, and occasionally bizarre, new world of money. We publish a magazine that features conversations with geniuses and weirdos, advice on investing and taxes, and stories that unpack the big strange world we live in. We also produce a podcast, an education site, and now a newsletter. And we need some help.
We’re looking for a News Editor to lead our four-times-a-week newsletter, which we intend to be a best-in-class resource about (mostly) Canadian business and markets. And by that we mean it’ll be the most informative, fun, surprising, and useful business and financial newsletter in existence. With a dose of pop culture, sports, humanity.
This role will involve researching and assigning items to our in-house News Writer and to a stable of freelancers. The role is largely editing-focused, but the ideal candidate will be something of a hybrid writer and editor; we like editors who can turn around clean copy on short notice if need be. This role will report to the Editorial Director and work alongside the Magazine’s Senior Editor and News Writer.
Producing the daily edition will take place Monday – Thursday PM. Proofing and finalizing the weekly edition will require some time either Saturday or Sunday afternoon. We see this as a contract position initially, with the option of full-time employment down the road!

In this role, you'll have the opportunity to:

  • Source interesting new writers and work with established Magazine voices
  • Coordinate with teams across the company, including product, Investment Research, Portfolio Management, Compliance, and Marketing, to make sure the content we’re creating meets the needs of our business
  • Keep track of news, markets, crypto, etc., and find interesting ways to cover each in a way that’s quicker, sharper, and more interesting than reading the business pages

We're looking for someone who:

  • Brings deep experience in an editorial role at a media outlet
  • Excels at research, story ideation, and polishing and rewriting copy
  • Edits for style, humour, expertise, and clarity
  • Keeps up with pop culture, politics, and sports — and of course markets and technology
  • Proactively finds stories that other outlets miss
  • Is creative. We don’t just want to do what we’ve already done; you'll help push the newsletter into new territory
  • Is obsessive about publishing the planet’s most interesting, useful, entertaining, and absolutely accurate money content
  • Is interested in crypto (or has an interest in learning!)
  • Isn’t necessarily an expert on financial topics, but is down to become one 🚀
We’re building products for a diverse world, and we need a diverse team to do that successfully. We encourage applications from everyone regardless of race, religion, colour, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, or disability status. Wealthsimple provides an accessible candidate experience. If you need any accommodations throughout the interview process and beyond, please let us know.
