We firmly believe that testing is an essential requirement to re-open the economy as quickly and safely as possible. Concentric is the largest provider of K-12 COVID-19 testing. We currently run state-level K-12 testing programs in more than 10 states and some of the nation’s largest school districts. To date, Concentric has sequenced more than 10,000 samples from a variety of sample types, in support of public health.We are seeking a motivated Program Lead, Bioinformatics and Biosecurity, to join our growing team and be a part of the implementation of COVID-19 testing and sequencing as we design the future of biosecurity. Specifically, you bring subject matter expertise in deep sequencing and bioinformatics to help lead Concentric’s growth in this domain for COVID-19 and beyond. Your responsibilities will include not only analysis of sequencing data, but supporting optimization of public health reporting on viral variants. In addition, you will serve as a Program Lead, interfacing with key wet lab teams in the Ginkgo Bioworks Foundry to ensure program success through high quality deliverables and appropriately resourced activities. You are a cross-functional team player, passionate about forming a tight, collaborative loop with our Foundry and wet lab teams to design better experiments and reach faster conclusions.
Responsibilities will include both technical subject matter expertise (SME) and Program leadership activities.

Technical SME responsibilities

  • Provide technical direction and guidance on bioinformatics to your team to ensure project success
  • Analyze sequencing data from multiple NGS technologies
  • Analyze varied genomic data sets (viral WGS, transcriptomics, resequencing, de novo genome assembly, metagenomics, etc.)
  • Interface with software engineers to create and implement NGS data analysis pipelines for production use
  • Support digital technology teams with data mining for discovery projects, as well as optimization of public health reporting of variant sequence data
  • Monitor scientific literature for new methods and data analysis tools
  • Effectively communicate scientific results to technical and non-technical audiences
  • Measure and evaluate team performance with respect to the technical success of team projects, as well as the continued development of your high-performing team

Program Lead responsibilities

  • Work with Concentric and Foundry leads to scope, plan, and lead projects to develop and implement new biosecurity monitoring and sequencing tools
  • Support resource management and project planning across Ginkgo and Concentric teams
  • Liaise with other internal teams to ensure NGS and data analysis are optimally incorporated in the project plans at an early stage and to avoid duplication of effort
  • Collaborate with wet lab operators on experimental design and analysis to optimize new analytic approaches using NGS technologies
  • Communicate project and team performance to executive leadership and external customers
  • Collaborate with customers and internal process development teams to establish commercial-scale processes developed by your team
  • Partner with our Business Development Team to identify and evaluate new project opportunities from both a technical and commercial perspective, and communicate Ginkgo’s unique offerings to current and potential customers
  • Assist with shaping Ginkgo and Concentric’s overall direction as a company and support its evolving needs, as necessary

Minimum Requirements

  • PhD with at least 3 years of experience in a relevant life science/computational biology field
  • At least three years of industrial experience in computational biology/bioinformatics, and at least one year of experience in a director-level role
  • Excellent project management skills, with the ability to oversee multiple simultaneous projects, meet deadlines, and collaborate with cross-functional teams
  • Proven track record of leading successful teams and mentoring multiple team members
  • Superb communication skills, with the ability to effectively convey project plans and complex technical details to a wide range of internal teams, executive leadership, and external customers
  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities and pivot as needed in a fast-paced environment

Preferred Capabilities & Experience

  • Direct sequencing and bioinformatics experience with SARS-CoV-2 or other viruses
  • Experience with many or all of the following:  Python, bash/unix scripting, samtools, bwa, snakemake, airflow, CWL, relational databases (SQL), samtools, GraphQL, distributed computing (AWS/Google Cloud), Docker, software version control (git)
  • Formal project management training is a plus
