Location: Amsterdam Area (Remote Possible, Hybrid once restrictions lift)

Duration: 6 Months

Start Date: Start of January

Our client is a global retail organisation headquartered in the Netherlands. They are looking to improve their application recovery capabilities throughout various platforms. The endeavor encompasses a wide range of applications, being hosted on a variety of infrastructure components. They are looking for three consultants that will support the Product teams in creating and optimizing the necessary runbooks for each of the critical applications. If you are up for a challenging and interesting role, this is for you!

Tasks and responsibilities:

You will initially support the various Product teams on the tech platform in setting the pre-conditions for effective recovery (processes, documentation, infrastructure). This is expected to take about 3 months. When these conditions are met, you will support the platforms in testing the application recovery (2 months) and finally help in creating processes to ensure continuous improvement in the established way of working is possible (1 month).

To be successful in this role, we expect the following tasks and deliverables:

  • Ensure the needed preconditions for effective recovery are in place
    • Create and support the creation of a clear listing of critical organizational resources needed in actual recovery: people, facilities, technical components, and external service(s) provider(s)
    • Clear mapping of functional and security dependencies at application and infrastructure level (for all platforms, including the enablement platforms)
    • Clear overview of accountable roles per platform for defining and implementing recovery criteria and associated plans
    • Recovery communication plan, alignment with already existing crisis management plans
    • Formal recovery processes need to be documented (e.g. the runbooks per platform/application)
  • Creating actual recovery capabilities by testing
    • Simulation of a ransomware attack: initiate plans, execute recovery processes, termination/handover to BAU. NB: External parties to be included here where possible, as (network)-communications will cease to exist during the real-life attack.
  • Creating strategic follow-up processes
    • Root-cause analysis improvement processes: preventive and detective
    • Continuous improvement
      • Process review and optimization: Were the key milestones met? Were the upfront assumptions correct?
      • Metrics review and optimization

About you:

  • You have the necessary skills in application recovery runbook development
  • You have had positions like Disaster Recovery Manager or Recovery Resolution Planner
  • You have experience in complex environments (financial institutions, production environments (IT/OT mix), or retail)
  • Have a deep understanding of the complexity of application chains in a technical environment
  • Have the detailed knowledge to see the task from a recovery perspective, and ask all the right questions to the team on how to recover the system they are responsible for in the case of ransomware attacks
  • Are able to challenge proposed solutions
  • Have an understanding of the complexity of dependencies in recovery
  • Excellent listener and communicator
