This role will build the foundation allowing for insightful, data-driven reports and dashboards. That will make life easier and more quantitative for a wide range of internal users across the Xero business.
The Data team is responsible for driving the adoption of data driven decision making across Xero - for both our internal users and our global audience of small business owners, bookkeepers and accountants. We create, manage and deliver a wide range of data services including core reporting, key data dimensions, extensible and scalable analytical data processing and storage facilities, machine learning tool sets, frameworks and AI prediction services.
We are the centre of expertise for data architecture, data modelling, machine learning, ethical data usage and artificial intelligence service design. We lead the effort to raise the data and AI literacy levels across Xero.

About the role:

  • Use SQL and other data technologies to source the required data, apply business rules and organise it into the most effective format. You’ll work with very large datasets and gain exposure to modern cloud based data platforms
  • Facilitate sessions with a diverse range of business users and data domains such as Operations, Marketing, Sales, Product, Customer experience, Strategy and Finance to understand, clarify and document business requirements. Convert data into actionable insights based on the business requirements.
  • Create, support and maintain reporting, dashboards and self service insights applications for internal stakeholders that will drive change and increase business understanding.
  • Work closely with the other functions of the Data team to ensure the right data is being sourced, the approach is optimal and any new data requirements that cannot be supported through the insights and analytics platform are fed back into our team
  • Identify and highlight data quality issues and work through the correction process with relevant teams
  • Effectively manage multiple work requests concurrently, self manage your workload and manage expectations with stakeholders
  • Stay current with emerging practices, techniques and tooling that enables insights at scale.
  • Understand and respect all Data Use policies and hence represent a responsible approach to data usage.
  • Contribute and participate in company values, culture and wider team initiatives
  • Contribute to improvements in our data sourcing, discoverability, enrichment, modelling that enable insights.
  • Contribute to improvements in the way Xero conducts analytics and delivers business insights
  • Contribute to the team standards and practices of working
  • Support BI Tool Administration as and when required including any other contributions as directed by the leadership team.

About you:

  • Inquisitive, has a passion for data and is comfortable using data discovery tools.
  • You have experience effectively converting data from multiple sources into information to aid in decision making.
  • You enjoy collaboratively solving complex problems at scale
  • You love gaining new skills and learning from experts to provide effective solutions to business problems using data analytics.
  • You are comfortable with working with ambiguous requirements to solve problems and guide stakeholders.
  • You are a quick learner, team player, detail oriented and enjoy exploring new tools and their functionalities.

What you'll bring with you:

  • Desire and appetite for identifying areas of improvement along with recommendations to automate reusable and easily maintainable data assets.
  • Excellent communication (written and oral) & collaboration skills and the ability to translate between business and technical audiences.
  • Experience in data analytics and knowledge of data warehousing techniques.
  • Expert level skills in gathering stakeholder requirements to deliver business insights as per the gathered requirements.
  • Enjoys unravelling complexity and can demonstrate effective problem solving skills.
  • Highly adaptable team player able to deliver in a changing environment.
  • 3-5 years of experience in a data analytics role.
  • Advanced SQL skills.
  • History of designing and building proof-of-concept tools when needed to reduce workload using software engineering principles and version control.
  • Strong analytical skills at the macro and micro level, including handling personal and identifiable information.

  • The following specialist skills would be advantageous:
  • Experience with transformation, data quality, and orchestration tools: Python, Snowflake, DBT, Datavault 2.0, Microstrategy, Any Visualisation tool.
