About Us
The Athletic is a direct-to-consumer digital sports media company committed to helping subscribers experience storytelling in a whole new way. Founded in 2016 and headquartered in San Francisco, The Athletic has over 500 full-time employees and covers more than 250 professional sports and collegiate teams in the US, Canada and the UK. The Athletic’s newsroom has produced thousands of in-depth articles along with more than 120 podcasts and premium video content. The Athletic is a remote-friendly company as we have offices in San Francisco, Los Angeles, London, and Melbourne.

About the Role
Our subscription business has grown rapidly over the past few years, driven by our investment in high quality content and an enthusiastic user base. In parallel, we’ve diversified our revenue streams, most notably by partnering with like-minded brands who want to reach our users. We’ve built an impressive advertisement business off-platform (e.g., in podcasts), and recently successfully launched multiple MVP experiences of sponsored content in-platform.
In this role, you will partner closely with our Sales, Engineering, Design, Marketing, and Analytics teams, other Product Managers, and our world-class Newsroom. Most critically, together you will craft our long-term strategy and vision for our in-platform sponsored content business. You will translate that into a clear technical roadmap including architecture, tooling, and user-facing features, leading your technical team to deliver against it. Your primary goal for 2022 is to develop a scalable platform for serving inline advertisements in email and our web+app product. In parallel, you will deliver new and improved co-branded bespoke content experiences for our users.
We are looking for a Senior Product Manager to lead this high-priority business area with meaningful bottom-line impact.

Responsibilities

  • Partner with Sales, Engineering, and Newsroom leaders to define our long-term strategy and vision for our in-platform sponsored content business.
  • Recommend a build vs. buy decision, and a specific solution, by evaluating third-party ad server vendors against our business and technical needs.
  • Develop a clear long- and short-term technical roadmap that will deliver a scalable ad platform, including architecture, tooling, and user-facing features.
  • Lead a tech team (engineering, design, product marketing, analytics) to execute against your roadmap.
  • Gain alignment on your strategy with, and communicate results to, key internal cross-functional and executive stakeholders.
  • Collaborate closely with the rest of the Product team to align initiatives and dependencies, so that we create a cohesive product experience.

Requirements

  • 4+ years of relevant product management experience at a fast-growing company; consumer and/or media is a plus.
  • Backend technical expertise, in education or in practice, that you will leverage for integration and architecture decisions in partnership with engineers.
  • Experience integrating third-party technical solutions.
  • Experience partnering with and coordinating a diverse set of stakeholders to deliver initiatives against both shorter and longer timelines.
  • Ability to find win/win opportunities for customers, users, and the business.
  • User empathy - for both our ad customers and The Athletic users.
  • Basic UX sensibilities you will leverage for our scaled ad solution and bespoke experiences.
  • Comfort with data - analyzing data, deriving insights, and making data-driven decisions.
  • Eagerness to try new things and learn - and a willingness to fail.
