About NavaOur mission is to partner with government agencies to deliver digital services and infrastructure that makes programs simple, effective, and accessible to all. As a public benefit corporation, our intent is not to win as much work as we can, but to design a portfolio that makes the highest leverage progress against that mission.
About this RoleNava is hiring a Director of Engineering to support the health and impact of the engineering organization. You are a thoughtful and empathetic engineer motivated by providing usable solutions that help people. You're organized, collaborative, and care about both technology and the engineers you'll be leading. You have experience in coordinating across multiple teams with different tech stacks, architectures, and stakeholders.
You have a broad knowledge of modern engineering tools and technology and recognize that each project / problem has its own challenges and technical needs. You have the patience and problem-solving enthusiasm to refactor and integrate with legacy systems and services. Coaching your teams on how to think about a whole system and choose the most impactful improvement and automation will be a large part of your contribution.
Your leadership will help us better serve the people who use government services, the needs of the agencies we work with, and the changes we can make to have a large and lasting impact. Though there may be some opportunities to be hands-on and direct the specific approaches your teams use, your preference should be guiding your teams to make good choices (and follow through on implementing them).
Below are some of the traits of candidates who will likely be successful in this role. If you're excited about this opportunity but don't think you meet all the requirements, apply anyway!

What you'll do

  • Improve existing capabilities and identify and develop new ones to increase our competitiveness through training and development
  • Identify opportunities for technology investment and reuse to help engineering teams develop higher quality solutions with less effort
  • Collaborate with VP of Engineering and other engineering leaders to meet company objectives, recruit and hire, establish best processes and practices, grow according to the team vision, and represent engineering for Nava
  • Manage a team of 4-8 direct reports across multiple projects
  • Comfortable doing the double duty of engineering leadership and people management with the right balance of compassion and candor
  • Develop and refine equitable practices and cultivate a diverse and effective team, fostering equal opportunity and an inclusive environment for all
  • Seek support from champions within Nava or amongst clients, especially in the digital services and digital transformation space, where there is anticipated resistance to new practices or decisions
  • Provide support for direct reports on any contract (E.g. scrubbing in to help get a project on track, providing direct support if a member on the Engineering team encounters a complex stakeholder management situation in partnership with other program or practice leads)
