Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) is the national umbrella organization for the nation’s leading network of women’s health care providers, educators, and advocates, serving women, men, teens and families. Planned Parenthood Action Fund (PPAF) is the advocacy and political arm of PPFA. For over 100 years, Planned Parenthood has done more than any other organization in the United States to improve women’s health and safety, prevent unintended pregnancies, and advance the right and ability of individuals and families to make informed and responsible health care decisions.  
Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) and Planned Parenthood Action Fund seeks a Vice President of Brand and Culture Strategy, an innovative department that leads and executes creative expression of the brand, audience research and develops strategies to advance our brand with target audiences.

Purpose

  • The Vice President, Brand Culture and Strategy reports to the Senior Vice President for Communications & Culture, and oversees a unit of approximately 32 people inclusive of creative and content production, editorial, brand projects, brand marketing, research, corporate partnerships, and influencer engagement. This position sits on the Communications & Culture leadership team and works closely with other senior leaders throughout the PPFA national office to drive bold, innovative strategies to create a more favorable social and political environment for sexual and reproductive health care and rights. The candidate should have a strong understanding of advocacy, policy implementation and politics. Experience with sexual and reproductive healthcare is a plus.

Delivery

  • Create and implement proactive, federation-wide brand strategies to promote Planned Parenthood’s education, health care service, and advocacy mission to diverse audiences, including the general public, political decision makers, and funders.
  • Develop and execute a proactive campaign and evergreen content production and distribution strategy designed to elevate and heighten affinity for our brand, tell the stories of our people, and reduce stigma about sex, sexuality, abortion and related issues. Work with leaders across departments and divisions to ensure our creative strategy elevates our profile as a health care provider, sex educator, and advocate. September 2019
  • Oversee brand research and ensure that takeaways are utilized to inform overall program development and decision-making at the organizational strategy level. Serve as primary thought partner for brand and marketing affiliate staff to shape brand efforts of the federation writ-large.
  • Monitor brand perception through times of great upheaval and change; give strategic recommendations to organizational leaders on maintaining brand strength and growth among priority constituencies (e.g. teens, people of color).
  • Oversee the development of plans for partnerships with content providers and other online entities to develop and disseminate content to key audiences.
  • Oversee the creation of an integrated strategy on celebrity/influencer engagement work, making sure we are maximizing opportunities and voices to mainstream our issues and introduce our work to new audiences.
  • Set brand expression goals and work across departments including partnerships with PP affiliate and brand marketing efforts, corporate and celebrity brands, events & conferences, and other highly visible means.
  • Ensure content, creative, and culture strategy is positioning the Planned Parenthood brand to be relevant and impactful to a new generation of patients and advocates, especially young people and people of color.
  • Oversee the Brand & Culture fiscal year budget. Ensure fiscal responsibility and spending that drives key performance indicators.

Engagement

  • Work with the SVP and VP for Communications to develop and drive the theory of change for the organization on the most effective strategies for shifting culture to be favorable to sexual and reproductive health care and rights, including evaluation and measurement of culture change efforts.
  • Work with the Brand & Culture team to develop an integrated plan for our engagement with the creative community (producers, writers and directors in film and television) to accurately and persuasively tell stories about issues of sexual and reproductive health and rights.
  • Work with other senior leaders in the Communications & Culture leadership team, develop and execute strategic multi-faceted campaigns, ensuring culture strategy is aligned with media, partnerships, digital, affiliate components, and other facets.
  • Work with senior leaders in the health care division, particularly the VP for Education, and the Policy, Campaigns and Advocacy division to implement cohesive brand strategy through all communication channels, and for all audiences.
  • Proven Ability to Communicate to Multiple Audiences: The complexity of communications management at Planned Parenthood is rooted in the need to communicate effectively and simultaneously to multiple audiences

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs)

  • Significant experience in new media, digital platforms, and content production and distribution
  • Superb storytelling skills and brand sensibility
  • Strong track record of innovation, creativity, and moving the needle on culture change efforts
  • Direct and substantial experience involving message strategy and development on a national scale.
  • Strong evaluation skills and being able to shift projects and strategies based on data-driven performance
  • A record of success creating and implementing brand strategies for a large, complex organization.
  • Exceptional judgment and proven ability to handle rapid-response scenarios calmly under pressure
  • A record of recruiting and developing a diverse and talented staff. A person who places a high priority on the professional development of staff through delegation of responsibility and expert tutelage.
  • Excellent people management skills, ensuring staff are meeting goals and objectives in a sustainable way and growing professionally
  • Demonstrated experience and understanding of diversity, equity and inclusion.
  • Commitment and track record of advancing racial equity in both operations and communications
  • Superb interpersonal skills with an impressive history of collaboration and forging strong relationships with multiple stakeholders.
  • Proven ability to manage and prioritize a multi-million dollar budget with many outside vendors and internal projects.
  • Ability to handle controversial issues and to translate information about them to broad audiences.

Travel

  • Approx 30% (non-pandemic) 
Starting Salary: $200k
Final offers for this job will be based on capabilities and will be made within the parameters of the PPFA compensation program. Total offer package to include generous vacation + sick leave + paid holidays, individual/family provided medical, dental and vision benefits effective day 1, life insurance, short/long term disability, paid family leave and 401k. We also offer voluntary opt in for Flexible Spending Account (FSA) and Transportation/Commuter accounts.
