Amyris is seeking a full-time Senior Director, Product Development and Commercialization to support the development, testing, compliance and production of its color and skincare clean beauty brands. This is an exciting opportunity for anyone interested in pursuing a career in Product Development, by working with industry specialists in marketing, formulation, testing and packaging, and gain hands-on experience in the full product concept to launch process. 

Responsibilities:

  • Partner with internal brand teams to identify new product innovations and materials to investigate, benchmark and develop
  • Prototype new product concept ideas for internal evaluation and testing needs until formula approval
  • Manage shade matching development process for internal evaluation and approval
  • Create and manage master formulas for new product innovations 
  • Define, maintain, and communicate formulation costs for COGS to upper management
  • Liaise with regulatory and compliance teams to substantiate ingredient compliance
  • Create & maintain an organized physical library for all raw materials and project lab masters
  • Research raw materials, and physically and digitally organize samples and technical data sheets
  • Define specifications and processing criteria to ensure optimal scale up flow from laboratory bench to pilot, manufacturing and filling
  • Partner closely with Renfield operations team to ensure seamless transition of tech transfers to pilot and manufacturing while considering process optimization and scale up needs
  • Manage and effectively communicate critical path schedules and any risks to budget, launch timing, and packaging compatibility
  • Research and compile best practices for sustainability of ingredients, formulations and manufacturing processes throughout development process 
  • Continually enhance the front-end process and conduct effective research to uncover insights to drive development of new concepts and innovative product attributes for unique and differentiated product features 
  • Responsible for both current product optimization as well as new product development

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Sciences, Chemistry, Biochemistry and/or related science field and has interest in green chemistry and sustainability
  • 14+ years experience and demonstrated abilities in developing cosmetics, especially color cosmetics
  • Knowledge and hands on experience in formulation development in color cosmetics
  • Understanding of color theory and experience with shade matching needed
  • Ideal candidate will have passion for and an interest in cleaner, safer and more sustainable alternatives in beauty products
  • Must be able to work quickly, take initiative, track the status of items, and be resourceful while working independently
  • Be a team player with an entrepreneurial spirit, while projecting a professional attitude and foster a positive team atmosphere
  • Ability to participate within a multi-disciplinary team as well as acting autonomously as appropriate
  • Strong verbal/written communication skills are essential - proficiency in Outlook, Excel, Word & PowerPoint is required 
  • Expert level interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to travel 30% of the time

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Masters Degree in Chemistry or other related science a plus
