The Opportunity:
Caraway is looking for a Controller to join our growing finance team. Reporting to the VP of Finance, you will be responsible for all aspects of the accounting function, ensuring timely and accurate reporting on business performance. As our Finance team and function as a whole is still developing and actively evolving, the Controller must have a desire to continuously optimize and evolve the accounting function. The Controller will oversee the accounting side of the house, including 2 direct reports, and will be responsible for clear two way communication with the VP of Finance to ensure clarity across all happenings in the Finance function. Our close-knit team is still in an exciting stage of growth and this person will be instrumental in designing scalable and sustainable accounting processes.

This individual will work just as closely with our internal teams as with our vendors and customers, and is excited about building those relationships. You are excited by the opportunity to join a team that is looking to uplevel their accounting processes. You’re a problem-solver and are determined to understand the technical nuances of your ERP system and how all transactions happen. You operate comfortably in ambiguity and the building stage of an organization and are a proactive self-starter to achieve goals even without an instruction manual in front of you. You can delegate and resource efficiently and communicate effectively with cross functional stakeholders and leaders.
Responsibilities:
- Oversee and manage the general accounting functions, including, but not limited to: accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, financial reporting, taxes, treasury, and cash management.
- Coach, manage, and mentor a team of 2 staff accountants to continuously support the function while balancing their growth, performance, and impact
- Lead the team on the monthly close process to ensure completeness and accuracy while identifying areas to optimize for faster delivery
- Evaluate and optimize current accounting processes and systems, including ERP, and implement improved processes to support the company as it scales
- Lead and coordinate annual Audit of financial statements
- Partner with the VP of Finance to identify additional areas of the finance function and organization to address any finance or accounting related tech debt
- Partner consistently with the VP of finance to ensure constant two-way communication of both sides of the Finance house: Accounting + Forecasting/Planning
- Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal government taxation requirements
- Support weekly and monthly reporting to internal management team and external stakeholders
- Develop, implement, and ensure compliance with internal control policies and procedures, partnering with any cross-functional stakeholders like the People Operations team
- Other related duties as necessary or assigned within a high-growth environment
Knowledge, skills, and abilities:
- 8+ years of experience in accounting, CPA required
- 3+ years of people management experience
- DTC/ecommerce experience required; companies with physical product/inventory preferred
- BA/BS in Accounting
- Proficiency in financial software including, ERP systems and Microsoft Excel, experience with Fulfil preferred
- Desire and ability to work in a fast-paced environment
- Self-starter with ability to confidently re-prioritize a growing to-do list
- Strong communication skills with the ability to work collaboratively within and across departments
- Highly detail oriented and a proactive problem-solver
The anticipated base salary range for this role is $180,000 - $200,000 - Final compensation will depend on a variety of factors determining the base pay at offer, including but not limited to: skills, qualifications, experience. This range provides the opportunity to progress as you grow and develop within a role.
